about
From the soon-to-be-released full-length album.
The greatest man I ever knew was a scholar of world religions, of the histories of cultures, and of the musics of the globe’s people. My greatest muse and teacher, he believed, and I believe, in a common thread that connects all human beings in a universal mandala. We believe in the goodness of people; in the unifying powers of compassion, education, the arts and curiosity.
This, the first song that came after losing him to leukemia was a personal Call to Arms which came not only from a place of grief but from one of gratefulness and hope.
Our community had emptied their pockets to us and became our comrades in woe and in war. Together, we took up arms and fought a battle against cancer: a community that felt more like a family.
Two years after it was written, this song that he inspired has surprised me by taking on a new meaning that extends beyond us. It rises out of a shared grief and calls to arms a bigger community to fight against a different kind of cancer.
Bigotry, misogyny, racism- these are diseases that must be cured.
There has never been a better time to take up the arms of education, compassion and the arts.
Stand together, comrades.
lyrics
The emptier of pockets
the bearer of the arms
March we into battle
sound the droll alarms
Fear not, comrades in woe
Fear not, comrades in war
The bearer of our secrets
the holder of our charms
carrying the banner
we call ourselves to arms
Fear not, comrades in woe
Fear not, comrades in war

It would be a mistake to only listen to this during the holidays. I think that this album is a wonderful Brown Bird album on its own and shouldn't be brushed aside just because it's a Christmas album. I don't even like Christmas music, but this is fantastic. Keej
